Layton, UT- Sandra M. (Brideau) Buckley, age 82, passed away March 24, 2018, following several years of declining health.
Sandie was born October 12, 1935, in Berlin, New Hampshire, the daughter of the late Roland and Kathleen (Steady) Brideau. She was married to the late Herbert Buckley with whom she raised three sons and two daughters. She was a graduate of Berlin High School, in Berlin, New Hampshire, and of Lasell Junior College in Newton, Massachusetts, in nursing, after which she received her training at some of the finest hospitals in Boston. In her earlier years, Sandie was employed as a registered nurse at St. Louis Hospital and later at Androscoggin Valley Hospital, in Berlin, New Hampshire. She also served as an American Red Cross volunteer nurse. In her later years, she was a caregiver of young children while serving as a nanny.
Sandie was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in many callings, including Relief Society president (both Branch and Stake), Primary president, Seminary teacher, visiting teacher, and music leader/coordinator. Recognizing that Sandie, at a tender age, was musically gifted, her mother encouraged her to sing whenever possible, so she performed often at family gatherings and other occasions. Throughout her adult life, Sandie pursued other singing opportunities, including performing in locally produced musicals, such as The Sound of Music (as the Mother Abbess). She also composed music and lyrics for family, church and community events. One notable highlight of her life was the occasion in which she sang a solo for President Spencer W. Kimball—a hymn that she, herself, composed, entitled I Know My Savior Lives.
Sandie adored her family—they were first, last and always—but she loved all people and had a special appreciation for their diversity and was comfortable interacting with people of all walks of life and backgrounds. She had an especially kind heart and a unique gift for putting people at ease and for making them feel appreciated.
Sandie is survived by her two daughters, Liz Thompson of Kaysville, Utah, and Rae Buckley-Marsh and her husband, Jeff, of South Ogden, Utah, and by two sons, Andy and his wife, Claudette, of Vernon, Connecticut, and Scott, and his fiancée, Tammy Rispoli, of Orlando, Florida.
She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren: Brittany Marsh and Noah Marsh, both of South Ogden, Utah; English Haddon of Washington Terrace, Utah; Sawyer Thompson and Jamie Thompson and his wife, Jamie, of Kaysville, Utah; Griffin Buckley and his wife, Melissa, of Las Vegas, Nevada; Sabrina Pettersson and her husband Brenton of Rochester, New York; Sierra Buckley of Vernon, Connecticut; Jaime Nelson and her husband, Sam, of Billings, Montana; Devin Buckley of Berlin, New Hampshire; and Laura Buckley of West Jordan, Utah. She also leaves behind many great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Sandie was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Herb, one son, David Buckley, one son-in-law, Lenard Thompson, two grandchildren, Katelyn Buckley and Daniel Jolin, and her brother, Paul Simpson.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Inspiration Hospice, especially her nurse Donnette of over two years, and nurse practitioner Steve; the staff at Apple Village for the many years of great care and friendship; the staff of Canyon Hospice, especially, volunteer Sierra; the staff of Mountain View Health Services for taking her in and giving her a home when our options were so limited; and, finally, the staff at Pheasant View Assisted Living for taking such good care of her during the last couple months of her life.
Friends and relatives may call on the family on Sunday, April 1st, from 6 to 8 PM, and Monday, April 2nd, from 10 to 11 AM at the LDS Chapel, 5855 Skyline Drive, South Ogden, Utah. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Monday, April 2nd, at the same location. Interment will follow in Kaysville City Cemetery in Kaysville, Utah.
